Writing Workshops for Teens
I love visiting schools and libraries and I really enjoy meeting with teens of all ages to deliver workshops about the craft of writing, both in person and virtually. Students who attend my workshops will learn what goes into the making of a book and what it’s like to work as a writer.
As a long-time teacher of creative and professional writing, I have extensive experience running workshops that are engaging, fun, and encouraging to young writers and readers.
Students in grades 8-12 will be especially interested in the content of my books as well as the writing exercises I employ.
Common topics and themes include:
- Overcoming Rejection and the Value of Perseverance
- Story Structure
- Writing Short Stories and Screenplays
- Personal Narratives
- Writing Poetry and Making Chapbooks
- Diversity in Young Adult Books
- Careers for Writers
- Business Writing Skills
- Writing Fantasy Worlds
- Effective Written Communication
I am a proud member of CANSCAIP and SCBWI and hold an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC. I taught public relations writing, copywriting, and communications at Douglas College and have taught creative writing at Vancouver Community College.
