School Visits

Writing Workshops for Teens

I love visiting schools and libraries and I really enjoy meeting with teens of all ages to deliver workshops about the craft of writing. Students who attend my workshops will learn what goes into the making of a book and what it’s like to work as a writer.

As a long-time teacher of creative and professional writing, I have extensive experience running workshops that are engaging, fun, and encouraging to young writers and readers.

Students in grades 8-12 will be especially interested in the content of my books as well as the writing exercises I employ.

Common topics and themes include:

  • Overcoming Rejection and the Value of Perseverance
  • Story Structure
  • Writing Short Stories and Screenplays
  • Personal Narratives
  • Writing Poetry
  • Using Your Imagination
  • Diversity in YA Books
  • Careers for Writers

I am a proud member of CANSCAIP and SCBWI and hold an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC. I taught writing at Douglas College and Vancouver Community College.
